As we have said before, the truly great drivers in drag racing are exposed when the crap hits the fan. Such was the case for Aussie racer Brett Gillespie at an event back in November. As you’ll see, Gillespie’s bad ass screw blown Mustang, an Aussie Top Doorslammer machine explodes at the top end of the track, likely a connecting rod failure. As the block is blown apart and oil is sprayed onto the already boiling hot headers, instant fire is the result. This is terrifying at any speed but especially at those closing in on 250 mph. As you will see in the video, Gillespie does an amazing job of keeping the car straight, pulling the fire bottles when he could, and then spinning the car out before it could have gone into the sand and caused more damage to itself and Gillespie, potentially.

We certainly don’t celebrate Gillespie’s misfortune, but we do celebrate his totally awesome driving and cool head under pressure. If he had pulling the fire bottles and started ripping the brake handle before getting control of the car, there’s no telling how badly this could have ended. Here’s to hoping that the damage wasn’t too bad and the car can be repaired to race again!
