2 seat roadster Explodes at Lakeland Dragstrip

“Friday BOOM”. This is where we’ll have a video of stuff blowing up. Last week it was an A/Fuel dragster and this week it is a wild street-legal roadster that actually competed at Hot Rod Drag Week a few years ago. We’re happy to note thqt the driver made it out of this thing ok, but the car…well you have to see what happens to the car.

One of the more interesting entries in Hot Rod Drag Week’s Unlimited Class was the 1937 Ford two seat roadster that appeared at the 2011 running of the event. The car was basically a double wide Suncoast Race Cars super gas roadster that had been beefed up and modified for street duty. The car was powered by a small block that snorted down a face full of nitrous and it was a truly unique looking piece. Chad and I actually saw this very car compete at the Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green this year. It was clipping off some pretty stout seven second runs and we were wondering if the car would be hitting the Drag Week trail in 2012.

The car was not on Drag Week because it exploded and burned to the ground in horrifying fashion at Lakeland Dragstrip in Florida. While conclusive evidence is not exactly floating around the internet. We have read several accounts that state the driver tried to restart the car after it stalled and that move caused the top of the engine, which was filled with nitrous to explode, leading to the scary inferno you’ll see below. Note the dude in shorts who essentially stands in fire to get the driver out oft he car. Some serious hero action there.
